One of my daughters was absolutely obsessed with mermaids -- particularly Ariel -- when she was 5 and 6 years old.
We would go to the park and "play pretend" with her little sister being Flounder and me being Ursula. (Yes, I am one of those moms who plays with her kids. I'll let you decide whether or not that's a good thing.)
My in-laws gave her a toy like this for Christmas, and the girls called it "Ariel's Grotto."
If you know a little girl who has a similar love of mermaids, you can either make this simple mermaid doll for them, or you can do it together. (I suggest doing the latter.)
If you like, you can attach craft popsicle sticks to the bottom and turn your mermaids into puppets.
We chose to make an "Ariel-style" mermaid, with off-white skin, orange-red hair, purple top, and green tail. But certainly don't feel limited those colors. Your mermaid can look any way you want!

- Cut out the templates carefully, then use them to trace on colored paper and cut out the pieces for your mermaid.
- Use markers and glitter to decorate the mermaid clothes and tail.
- Attach both pieces of the mermaid’s tail using paper glue. Allow the glue to dry.
- Measure the paper roll's circumference and height and then cut out o piece of skin-toned paper in those dimensions.
- Draw eyes, blush, and mouth on paper. (If you're feeling a silly, you can use googly eyes.)
- Then glue the paper around the tissue paper roll and allow the glue to dry down completely.
- Glue the hairpiece on the top of the tissue paper roll.
- Glue the mermaid’s blouse/top on the tissue paper roll and let the glue dry.
- Use a pencil or marker to make swirls with the long paper strips and slight curls on the ends of the smaller strips.
- Glue the swirly strips on the front and the curls on the back. You can vary this to make her hair as full (or as curly) as you want.
- Finally, glue the mermaid's tail onto the bottom of the paper roll.
